Software Engineering Certification Program
The Institute of Software Engineering is
proud to offer a 12 hour certification in
Software Engineering. This program is
administered and maintained by the Software
Engineering (SE) Certificate Advisory
Committee of the Education Activity Board of
ISE. The advisory committee consists of
Professors William M. Lively, Jim Helm,
Sharon A. White and Dick B. Simmons, all of
whom are founding members of the board of
directors of ISE.
An ISE certificate in Software Engineering
can be earned by taking four courses in the
certificate program specialization. Courses
taken for the SE certificate Program may
also be applied to graduate degrees since
they are offered through accredited
universities who are members of ISE and its
Shared Software Infrastructure Program (SSIP).
The SSIP is organized under the Texas
engineering Experiment Station, Texas A&M
University System. To earn an ISE SE
Certificate, a student must take four of the
ISE recommended graduate or advanced
undergraduate courses and make a B or better
in each of the courses applied to the SE
Certificate.
The SE Certificate is modeled after core
course areas described in Software
Engineering 2004, Curriculum Guidelines for
Undergraduate Degree Programs in Software
Engineering, A volume of the Computer
Curricula Series, August 23, 2004. The
Guidelines were produced by a Joint IEEE
Computer Society/Association for Computing
Machinery Task Force on Computing Curricula.
Practicing Information Technology
Professionals are assumed to have experience
similar to SE211 Software Construction
recommended in the Curriculum Guidelines.
Prerequisites for the SE Certificate
- BS degree
- A practical background in some area of Information Technology.
The SSIP offers a non-credit distance learning course called SSIP
Software Engineering in the Small which helps prepare a student
to take SE Certificate courses. This course is
compliant with Curriculum Guidelines course
SE211 Software Construction.
To earn an SE certificate, students must take at
least one course at Texas A&M University (TAMU)
and/or University of Houston - Clear Lake
(UH-CL) from each of the 4 SSIP recommended
course categories. To view the list of
available courses at participating schools, please
use the list down here. (Note that these
courses are not offered every semester.)
You should apply to an SSIP university as a non-degree
or degree seeking graduate student. A
student may take up to 12 hours in
non-degree-seeking post baccalaureate status
and receive a SE Certificate and/or apply
these hours to a graduate degree.
To obtain the certificate, students need to send their
transcript/grade record to Dr Sharon A White at the following address.
Dr. Sharon Andrews White
Software Engineering Program,
University Of Houston, Clear Lake

Houston, TX 77058-1098
Email: whites at cl dot uh dot edu
Phone: 713-283-3867
Fax: 713-283-3869
Upon verification, you should expect an email indicating the successful completion
of certificate requirements. A printed copy of the certificate would be mailed to
your address immediately thereafter.
Students pay $500 to $800 per Semester Credit Hour (SCH)
depending on the university where the
student takes courses. Student loans are
available to student taking at least four
SCH's.
The courses will
all require student evaluations or
examinations during the semester. The
evaluations may be in the form of locally
proctored examinations, take-home
comprehensive examinations, oral
presentations from remote or local sites,
research reports, research projects, or
semester projects. The evaluation
instructions will be submitted either by
traditional mail, email, downloadable web
sites, or facsimile, at the discretion of
the instructor. The uniformity and content
of all examinations will be the same whether
students are on or off campus.
Today's information technology professional often needs
additional academic course work but it
unable to drive or move to campus because of
demands of job and family. These courses are
offered in a format where anyone who has
access to the Internet can take the courses.
Access to the course material will be
available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The
ideal candidate for SE Certificate courses
is a person working in the information
technology arena who holds a bachelors
degree in science, engineering, or
information sciences.
